There is a different feeling to fly fishing in North Macedonia. The fishing is intimate and often technical, with the Macedonian trout at the centre of the experience. This native trout is associated with cold, oxygen-rich mountain waters across several river systems, including the Treska and its tributaries, upper Vardar tributaries, Lepenec, Kadina Reka, Pčinja, Bregalnica and Babuna.
The Radika: wild water in the heart of Mavrovo
For the visiting fly fisher, the Radika and its tributaries in Mavrovo National Park are one of the defining experiences of North Macedonia.
The river moves through a landscape of forested mountains, limestone walls, deep pools and fast pocket water, creating the kind of fishing where observation and approach matter more than casting distance. Native trout are the characteristic fish of the Radika system, and the park keeps a regulated sport-fishing season on the river and its tributaries.
This is water for anglers who enjoy reading currents, stalking fish, fishing close to structure and presenting a fly without disturbing the surface.
A small dry fly. A long leader. A pocket between two rocks. One perfect drift.
And suddenly the whole canyon comes alive.

Treska: technical trout fishing within reach of Skopje
Few fishing destinations offer such an unusual combination of serious trout water and proximity to a capital city. The Treska rises high in the mountains before cutting through dramatic terrain and eventually reaching the famous Matka Canyon outside Skopje. Recent conservation work has focused on protecting and restoring the endemic trout of the Treska, including its Matka, Sveta Petka and Kozjak sections.
For the fly fisher, Treska is about technical water rather than easy water. Clear pools. Broken riffles. Tight casting lanes. Wary fish. Fast changes in depth. It is the kind of river that can make an experienced angler slow down, watch longer and cast better.
Pena, Kadina and the hidden mountain streams
North Macedonia becomes even more interesting when you leave the famous names behind. The country's trout waters extend into smaller tributaries and mountain systems including Pena, Kadina Reka, Lepenec, Bregalnica and Babuna. These are the waters we find particularly exciting for anglers who prefer the small-stream experience.
Walk. Climb. Wade. Crawl into position. Look before you cast. On intimate mountain creeks, your biggest enemy may not be the fish at all. It may be your shadow, your fly line or one careless step on the bank.
That is where fly fishing becomes hunting.
A trout with a story of its own
The country contains several native trout lineages, while the wider Lake Ohrid basin is home to the extraordinary Ohrid trout, a salmonid endemic to Lake Ohrid with an unusual evolutionary history and real conservation importance. We treat these fish as something to understand and protect, not simply as another species on a checklist.

Not just another fishing destination
- A morning on the Radika.
- A walk through Mavrovo.
- A technical session on the Treska.
- Lunch in a mountain village.
- A visit to an ancient monastery.
- An evening beside the river.
You are not travelling across North Macedonia simply to catch a trout. You are travelling to discover where the trout live.
