Albania fly fishing

Wild rivers. Native trout. The Albanian mountains.

Some of the most intriguing trout water in the Balkans: cold mountain rivers, limestone gorges, clear freestone streams and remote valleys where wild trout still dominate.

Our Albanian programmes focus on trout-rich mountain waters across the north and interior of the country, from the Black Drin, Valbona, Shala, Theth, Kir and Cem to trout-bearing waters of the Mati and the Vjosa drainage. The region is home to several native trout forms, including brown trout, marble trout and other locally distinct trout populations.

The Black Drin

The Black Drin is one of Albania's most important trout systems, with native trout including marble trout in parts of the Drin system. Its combination of cold water, varied structure and mountain surroundings creates opportunities for dry flies, Euro nymphing and streamer presentations.

Valbona and the Albanian Alps

Deep in the Albanian Alps, the Valbona is a spectacular mountain river with clear, cold water and trout, including marble trout in the wider Drin–Valbona system. Its pools, runs, pocket water and dramatic limestone surroundings make it exactly the kind of environment where stealth, precise casting and careful presentation become part of the adventure.

The neighbouring Shala and Theth waters add another dimension: smaller mountain streams, steep valleys and intimate trout water where the fishing can be as much about approaching the fish unseen as making the final cast.

Cem, Kir and the northern mountain streams

The Cem and Kir are among the northern Albanian rivers associated with native trout, including the locally recognised Cem trout. These are the kinds of waters where short, accurate casts, dry-fly presentations, tight-line and Euro nymphing techniques become essential rather than optional.

The Vjosa drainage

The Vjosa basin also contains native trout water, particularly in tributaries such as the Bënça and Shushica. The Bënça in particular remains an important mountain trout tributary within the Vjosa system.

Technical fly fishing in wild water

Albania is not about standing in the same pool all day. It is about reading broken water, approaching fish carefully, managing currents and putting a fly exactly where it needs to be. The principal target is trout, with the character of the fish and river changing from one drainage to another.

Come for the trout. Stay for Albania.

Fish beneath towering mountains. Walk through remote valleys. Eat local food. Meet people who still know the river by name.

This is not simply a fishing destination. It is an expedition into wild Albania.
